  • Erie's East Side Renaissance project outlines plans to revitalize historic neighborhoods as local leaders propose new housing and business spaces to boost community appeal.  The Erie Times-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In February 1986, a USAir DC-9 overshot the Erie runway and landed on Asbury Road, sparking a decades-long debate over local safety measures.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Erie's Red Barn chain, known for its red barn-shaped restaurants, Big Barney burgers, and profit-sharing with local nonprofits, closed five of its six locations in Feb. 1981 amid economic challenges and rising competition. The local franchise owner later became Erie County's first county executive (a lasting part of our area's dining history).  The Erie Times-News
  • On Feb. 18, 2026, local Erie churches held Ash Wednesday services that marked the start of Lent as clergy administered ashes and prayers to worshippers (at Holy Cross, Saint James, and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Churches), while fasting and meat abstinence were observed as part of the tradition.  The Erie Times-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Erie Refocused spurred more than $1 billion in investments that transformed the community over the last 10 years, with local projects driving growth in Erie.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Renovations could start this spring at Grover Cleveland Elementary School (1540 W. 38th St) while visitors can review historical photos dating back to 2002 before updates begin.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LECOM Health announced a new partnership with the Corry police department + the agreement funded an extra officer at Corry Memorial Hospital, raising the team to 13 officers to boost campus safety.  The Erie Times-News
  • Pennsylvania's DCNR will hold a virtual meeting on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. via Zoom to discuss the 25-year plan for Presque Isle, Erie Bluffs & the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. A recording will show on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Ridge Center.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • General McLane-Franklin girls basketball posted a highlights reel that showcased key plays from recent games. Fans can view the video online + get a closer look at the team’s progress this season.  The Erie Times-News
  • McDowell won its 22nd District 10 girls basketball championship today — a milestone that highlights the team's long-standing success.  The Erie Times-News
