  • Erie's community leaders remembered Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died Feb. 17 at 84 after a long illness, for his inspiring work and for visiting Second Baptist Church during the 'Your Vote Matters' event in Oct. 2024. Many noted his words bridged generations (leaving a lasting impact on the city).  The Erie Times-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Ernie the horse was rescued from icy, muddy conditions on Edinboro Lake after falling through ice on Feb. 16 near his farm as Edinboro and Lake City rescue teams + Lake Shore crews worked together to pull him to safety and a veterinarian confirmed he is in good condition.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Erie businesses have been reworking their payment methods as some add a credit card fee and others go cashless to cut costs. Lavery Brewing Co. now uses a 1.75%+20¢ surcharge, and Erie Events has adopted cashless payments, with few customer complaints reported.  The Erie Times-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local business and civic leaders launched Power Northwest today to boost energy and technology investment in ten counties including Erie. Sen. McCormick endorsed the plan at its Avalon Country Club event, saying the unified effort will highlight the region’s resources (gas, power, water) and academic strengths.  TalkErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Malakai Woodard Jones and Mekhia Woodard will graduate from schools in West Virginia while their dad, Marchello D. Woodard, is not present, marking a bittersweet milestone for the family.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie churches will serve fish dinners as part of Lenten traditions starting Feb. 20, with options for dine-in and takeout across several local venues (including All Saints, Blessed Sacrament, and Edinboro’s drive-thru at Our Lady of the Lake).   • Mercyhurst University will host National Girls and Women in Sports Playday on Saturday, Feb. 28 at its athletic center where girls K-8 join free activities at 11 a.m. and a women’s basketball game featuring the Lakers at 1 p.m. (Adult tickets cost $10.)  Mercyhurst University
  • Erie's Flagship City Curling League holds matches every Monday and Thursday in downtown Erie — offering community members the chance to try the Olympic sport of curling in a welcoming setting.  The Erie Times-News
