COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie Zoo announced on Feb. 12 that Wendy, a 9-year-old sand cat, was euthanized after being found injured on Feb. 8 with a fractured spine. The zoo plans to bring in a male to join surviving cat Adiri in the new sand cat habitat.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania lawmakers introduced bills to shift the rifle deer season opening day to the Monday after Thanksgiving to help rural communities sustain their hunting traditions. The Game Commission will finalize the 2026-27 season schedule on April 11 & the proposed change aims to restore long-standing practices.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is accepting applications for crew positions on the U.S. Brig Niagara with deadlines mid February. The brig (in a refit costing 5 million dollars in Maine) will hold training in Erie this spring before sailing into harbor on July 2.  The Erie Times-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New data from Zumper shows Erie apartment listings dropped by 15% from last year's median of $1,175 to a typical $1,000. One-bedroom units remain at $800 while two-bedroom listings hover around $1,025, both significantly lower than state and national prices.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kevin O'Connor of McDowell High became the winningest boys basketball coach on Feb.6 after a win over Girard Yellow Jackets + a North East resident urged Congressman Kelly to support a kidney care bill that improved treatment access after her daughter faced life-threatening kidney issues.  The Erie Times-News
