COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ WQLN Radio will change its schedule on March 2 by replacing syndicated shows with local programs to cope with federal funding cuts—new local shows will include Overnight Classics and additional programs while NPR shows remain unchanged. The Erie Times-News
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ NextEra Energy Transmission revived its stalled plan to build a 73-mile underwater transmission line from Canada to Erie County to meet growing electricity demand. The project is in regulatory review (public comments are being accepted) and is expected to be operational in 2031. The Erie Times-News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The American Community Survey released in January shows Erie's population dropped by 3.5% from 97,263 to 93,850 between 2019+2024. Broadband access rose to 88.2% and unemployment fell from 7.9% to 7.1%, indicating modest shifts in local demographics and the economy. The Erie Times-News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Erie County Health Department data show syphilis cases fell to 33 in 2025 from 59 in 2024 while gonorrhea cases dropped and chlamydia remained stable, suggesting local testing and treatment efforts are having an impact + free STD testing is available at several county sites. The Erie Times-News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ District 10 wrestlers did not secure a team medal at the PIAA tournament in Johnstown on Feb. 7, with Reynolds losing in the quarterfinals and General McLane (who had an opening win) later falling short, marking the second time since 2003 the district missed the podium. The Erie Times-News
