CULTURE NEWS

  • Erie once had many coin-operated payphones on street corners, bars, and shopping centers before mobile phones phased them out. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In January, Erie received about 31 inches of snow at Erie International Airport, pushing the winter total to 63.8 inches and keeping the city on track to reach its average of 104.3 inches by winter’s end (a typical winter pattern).  The Erie Times-News
  • Today, Presque Isle State Park officials warned visitors to stay off the ice dunes on Lake Erie—impressive to view but risky due to their hollow, slippery nature—so they can enjoy winter safely from a distance.  The Erie Times-News

  • Local ice fishing draws Erie anglers to Presque Isle Bay today, where ice nearly a foot thick supports hours on the frozen surface + proper gear is key for a safe outing.  The Erie Times-News
  • District 10 athlete of the week polls are now open for winter sports with online voting Monday+Wednesday at 5 p.m. until early March, excluding wrestling athletes; fans can email [email protected] to suggest nominees based on standout weekly performances.  The Erie Times-News
  • Fans can vote for District 10's best basketball support player until noon on Thursday, with candidates including local second- and third-leading scorers from schools such as Erie High, Cathedral Prep and Eisenhower.  The Erie Times-News
