COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie's Mayor Daria S. Devlin announced America250 celebration plans at the Erie County Kickoff event to honor the city's legacy. Events include a Commonwealth Concert Series on June 6, a fireworks show on July 3 at Liberty Park, and CelebrateErie weekend Aug. 14–16 with more details coming April 14.  TalkErie.com
  • The Erie Downtown Partnership is putting the annual Winter Carnival on hold for this year, delaying the event set for Feb. 27-March 1 while it gathers community input via an online survey, and officials will review responses at an upcoming board retreat.  The Erie Times-News

  • Eddie Bauer at Millcreek Mall will close today after 25 years of service, with mall management planning to find a new tenant soon — part of the retailer's national store closures.  The Erie Times-News

  • On Wednesday, Jan. 28, a Times News guide shows Erie residents how to lower grocery bills by preparing items like broth and baking mix from bulk ingredients (using fresh produce to save money as prices remain high). The advice offers practical DIY tips for cutting costs.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercyhurst University marked its centennial as COO Jeanette Britt outlined plans that use the school’s first 100 years to inspire forward-thinking programs—initiatives will blend tradition with future growth at campus events.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Erie is completely frozen over, with 90-100% ice covering over 9,327 square miles as of Jan. 27 because of recent storms and low temperatures (thickest ice near Presque Isle Bay reaches 12 inches). Winds may dislodge shore-fast ice, raising safety concerns for walkers.  The Erie Times-News
  • The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a cold weather advisory for Erie County from 7 p.m. Jan. 27 until 11 a.m. today when wind chills may drop below -20 (risking frostbite). Residents are urged to dress warmly and protect pipes and pets.  The Erie Times-News
  • Scientists are investigating the bottom of Lake Erie to learn more about its sediment & hidden ecosystems. They will share their findings in the coming weeks to help locals understand changes in the lake.  Erie Reader

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In December, Erie County's median home listing price reached $225,000, up 2.3% from November. Homes averaged 1,547 sqft, took 55 days on the market, and saw 92 new listings added.  The Erie Times-News
  • Ten of the priciest home sales in county history are featured from last year, with six in Millcreek and four in Fairview selling between $901,500 and $1.7 million, according to the Greater Erie Board of Realtors; the county’s average sale price reached $229,597.  The Erie Times-News
