  • Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is set to speak at the sold-out 15th annual Dr. King Awards Dinner on Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Ambassador Hotel & Conference Center, 7794 Peach St.  The Erie Times-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Diverse Erie invested $3.5 million in local minority-owned businesses and nonprofits that generated a $5.7 million economic impact, and it will open the next round of Small Business Mini-Grant applications in February to support more community initiatives in Erie.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie County school districts use guidelines in their handbooks where superintendents decide on delays or closures when extreme winter weather makes conditions unsafe today or in the future & help families plan accordingly.  The Erie Times-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • National Gluten-free Day on Jan. 12 highlighted the need for gluten-free foods as nearly 8% of Americans have gluten intolerance. Erie stores such as Giant Eagle and Walmart + local co-ops have increased offerings, and a community poll on gluten-free diets is planned for a future update.  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Erie Otters GM Dave Brown said the team traded key players (including captain Gabriel Frasca and forward Alex Misiak) to gain picks and boost development, a decision supported by coach Kris Mallette as the team prepares for home games on Jan. 16 and Jan. 17.  The Erie Times-News
  • Today, Fort LeBoeuf defeated Corry 44-30 in a District 10 non-region dual in Erie County, winning with four pins and two technical falls. The matchup maintained Fort LeBoeuf’s perfect dual meet record in a showdown of top local wrestling talent.  The Erie Times-News
  • District 10 wrestling Technique of the Week featured Seneca sophomore Kaleb Komisarski today as he performed a slide-by that boosted his 13-1 record plus earned wins at Tool City and the Major Tom Carr Invitational.  The Erie Times-News
