BUSINESS NEWS

  • GameStop stores in Erie County remain open despite closures at other locations in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The stores at Millcreek Mall, 1909 Rotunda Drive in Summit Township, and 4295 Buffalo Road in Harborcreek Township are still operating as of Jan. 5.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Pennsylvania Lottery announced on Jan. 5 that the Sheetz at 8180 Perry Highway sold a $1.5 million winning Cash Spectacular scratch-off ticket in Erie County & that the store will earn a $10,000 bonus for the sale.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County Judge Daniel Brabender retired on Jan. 4 after 16 years of service; on Dec. 31 he thanked those who supported his career (he reflected on his time on the bench).  The Erie Times-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • District 10's athlete of the week polls for winter sports resume this week, with voters submitting online ballots for nominees in basketball, swimming/diving, bowling, indoor track and hockey from Monday (5 p.m.) to Wednesday (5 p.m.), while separate voting for wrestling is planned this season.  The Erie Times-News
  • Voting for District 10 high school wrestlers (boys and girls) is open until Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. and recognizes standout performances from holiday tournaments with candidate bios available for review.  The Erie Times-News
  • Cathedral Prep boys wrestling defeated McDowell, 39–24, on Jan. 5 at McDowell’s Paul Goll Memorial Gymnasium using four pins and three technical falls to extend a decade-long winning streak over their crosstown rivals.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Erie Otters traded forward Alex Misiak to the Kingston Frontenacs yesterday in exchange for two draft picks, and the Ontario Hockey League mourns the death of former commissioner David Branch, who died Sunday, Jan. 4 and helped start a scholarship program for players.  The Erie Times-News
  • Over holiday break, D-10 high school wrestling saw key wins at the Powerade tournament in suburban Pittsburgh where Grove City's Chase Karenbauer and Northwestern's Cydney Rea earned titles, and at Meadville’s Tool City event where Fort LeBoeuf repeated as champions while other teams reached key milestones.  The Erie Times-News
