COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spiritual leaders and people of faith will join a prayer walk in Erie on November 1 from 3 to 6 p.m.—starting at Greater Calvary at 2624 German St. and ending at Perry Square—to pray for unity, justice and healing in the community.  The Erie Times-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Giant Eagle will let customers exchange unwanted pennies for double their value in store gift cards this Saturday, November 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the promotion requires a minimum of $0.50 in pennies and limits exchanges to $100 per transaction.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • The Erie County District Attorney’s Office dropped over 100 animal cruelty and neglect charges against 52-year-old Gregory Havican from his farm on Edinboro Road after a judge ruled the warrants lacked probable cause—Havican’s defense has filed a motion seeking fair market value reimbursement while most of the seized animals now live in new homes.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mercyhurst Theatre will stage a new adaptation of Little Women from Nov 20 through Nov 23 at Taylor Little Theatre on Mercyhurst University’s campus — Kate Hamill’s version reimagines the classic story with modern energy and a ten-person cast led by director Dr. Doug Powers. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. on Nov 20 to Nov 22 and 2 p.m. on Nov 23 with tickets ranging from $5 to $15 and an added processing fee.  Mercyhurst University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, Millcreek Township held a ceremony for National First Responder Day by swearing in seven new full-time firefighters and promoting its first three captains. The event marked a milestone for the fire department — local officials say the appointments will boost future leadership.  YourErie.com
  • The City of Erie announced that winter parking regulations will start on Monday, November 3, with enforcement on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Residents must park according to odd-even signs—damaged signs should be reported by calling 814 870 1111, and the rules will not apply on weekends unless a heavy snowstorm occurs.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ticks are very common this fall and local experts advised Erie pet owners to use flea and tick preventatives and repellents to protect both pets and themselves. Kennels Manager Heather Nies and Peninsula Pups owner Liz Freitag warned that symptoms like joint stiffness, fever, and lethargy require a vet visit (which may signal Lyme disease or anemia).  YourErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer is expected to suit up for his 10th NHL game today at Carolina for the New York Islanders, a play that will end his tryout period and finalize his three-year contract — the No. 1 overall pick last June has already recorded two goals and five assists so far — as he faces the Hurricanes. This game will confirm his spot on the roster and set the stage for his rookie season.  The Erie Times-News
  • Fort LeBoeuf beat Harbor Creek in a five-set match at McDowell High School on Oct 28 and will face Warren in the District 10 final today. Cathedral Prep also won a five-set thriller against Cochranton at Meadville High School to earn a spot in the championship and the PIAA tournament—showing a strong effort in a tight district round.  The Erie Times-News
  • Harbor Creek girls earned a 3-0 win over Warren at Hagerty Family Events Center on Oct. 28 to secure their District 10 Class 3A title with a shutout by goalkeeper Aubrey McClay and two goals from Raven Tonks — the win secured their PIAA playoff spot. General McLane boys repeated as champions with a 4-0 win over Meadville led by Carter Sindlinger and Gio Masone, and they will start PIAA playoffs on Nov. 4.  The Erie Times-News

  • Seneca girls and Mercyhurst Prep boys won District 10 Class 1A soccer finals on Oct 28 with 1-0 scores. Seneca’s win came in double overtime when Brenna Kuhl scored late while Mercyhurst Prep claimed their title with Max Peterson’s first-half goal and both teams qualified for next week’s PIAA 1A tournaments.  The Erie Times-News
