COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A survey by the Civic Impact Project, the Erie Community Foundation, and the Nonprofit Partnership found that local nonprofits lost $13.5 million in federal funding, with 15 groups losing all support. Other organizations have cut services and staff, and a government shutdown delaying SNAP benefits has deepened financial strain—nonprofits now call for more community help.  YourErie.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe will open a new 1,400-square-foot location on West 12th Street in Erie in December. Owner Darshan Patel said the cafe will operate at the former Doug Yaple Vacuum Center in Schaal Plaza — offering smoothies, wraps and sandwiches.  The Erie Times-News
  • Two new stores will open at Millcreek Mall for the holidays. Spirit Christmas will open in the old Dick's Sporting Goods spot on November 15—featuring fun animatronics and Santa visits—while Beelive will start in the Boscov's area during the first week in November with a range of bee products.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie restaurants changed in October as Franco’s Cafe moved from Renaissance Centre and plans to open in November at a new location on State St while Teresa’s Deli-Lakeshore changed ownership on Oct. 3 with no menu changes. Summit Township approved on Sept. 2 plans for a new Speed Check station that will include a restaurant—teetotalers also joined Sober Erie's mocktail event at a local brewery.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hagen History Center in Girard harvested an estimated 1.2 million grey sunflower heads on Tuesday from its two-acre field behind Battles Estate that attracted over 20,000 visitors last summer. The center will send the seeds to Wilds Sonshine Factory, the only sunflower distillery in the area, to create a unique liquor for local bars and restaurants next spring or summer while planning to make the field an annual attraction.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Adrian 'Woj' Wojnarowski — a former ESPN NBA reporter now serving as GM for St. Bonaventure — spoke at Gannon University on Oct. 27 as part of the JES speaker series. He talked about the NBA betting scandal, college players’ Name, Image and Likeness rights and future talents like 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama.  The Erie Times-News
  • Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson will speak today at the Bayfront Convention Center during the Jefferson Educational Society’s Global Summit Series—his talk 'This Just In: Latest Discoveries in the Universe' costs $35 with doors opening at 5 p.m.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winter preparations at Walnut Creek Marina have begun as the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission takes down the courtesy docks and closes fishing in the basin for a few days; the docks are expected to be reinstalled early May if weather allows—fishing will reopen once they are back in place.  YourErie.com
  • A recent report from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania shows Erie County is entering its peak fall foliage season this week—local trees will soon burst with bright colors.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents of Lake City Borough are under a boil water advisory—an emergency repair caused a loss of positive pressure in the water lines. An official said the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.  YourErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Harbor Creek defeated Cathedral Prep 3-1 on Oct. 27 at Jack Bestwick Stadium in the District 10 Class 2A boys’ soccer semifinal + scoring three second-half set piece goals to earn a PIAA playoff spot and prepare to face Fairview in the final on Oct. 30. In the girls’ bracket, Prep won 13-0 over Grove City and LeBoeuf beat Wilmington 10-0, with both teams set to compete for the district title on Oct. 30.  The Erie Times-News
