COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Barnhart Gives delivered nearly $71,000 from its annual charity golf outing at its North East headquarters on Wednesday, splitting the donation between Barber National Institute and Shriners Children’s Erie — officials from both groups attended the check presentation — to support their missions.  YourErie.com
  • Downtown Erie will host the expanded Autumn Soup Stroll event that features more soups and more stops — supporting Emmaus Ministries Soup Kitchen. Local residents will enjoy a cozy fall gathering with local flavors and a strong community spirit.  Erie Reader
  • A pay-what-you-can community dinner will be held on October 24 in Perry Square from 6 to 8 p.m., with cooks serving locally grown dishes including vegan collard greens, winter squash casserole, garlic mashed potatoes, turkey meat gravy, autumn cole slaw and cider braised lentils with leeks—sponsored by Erie Downtown Partnership.   • Blue pumpkin buckets let neighbors know that a trick-or-treater may be nonverbal or have a sensory processing disorder, and A Bridge to Independence on West 15th Street offers blue pumpkins for children so that candy givers can be more patient during Halloween.  YourErie.com
  • Several local religious organizations protested outside Erie County Prison yesterday as part of the One Church One Family movement — they conducted a living rosary calling for more compassionate treatment of immigrants amid increased ICE enforcement.   • The Diocese of Erie committed over $1.2 million to Triangle of Hope to transform the former St. Paul and Sacred Heart school buildings into outreach centers offering housing and social services—Triangle of Hope held a public presentation on Wednesday outlining renovation plans and aims to operate the centers by 2027.  YourErie.com
  • On Wednesday, the Barber Institute held Unity Day events where students, teachers, and staff wore orange to promote kindness and prevent bullying—classroom activities focused on teaching inclusion and early lessons on acceptance.   • Today the Flagship City Food Hall at 22 N. Park Row welcomes the new tenant We Corny (a Mexican street corn business launched by owners Tiffany and William LaVette after a trip to Myrtle Beach) to Erie. The business will operate Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (in the former Taco Cantina space next to Dina's Dominican), offering a menu of corn dishes, fries, chicken wings, hot dogs, and drinks.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie's Blind Tiger Spirit-Free Cocktails placed third in the USA TODAY 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Mixer Brand, finishing behind Yes Cocktails Co. and Iconic Cocktail Co. The business, which has won 40 awards to date (including double gold for its Bees Knees flavor), was started during the COVID-19 pandemic and inspired by prohibition-era speakeasies.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Erie Philharmonic will start its symphonic series with music by Brahms, Beethoven & Rachmaninoff at the historic Warner Theatre on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m., featuring Pittsburgh Symphony concertmaster David McCarroll making his Erie debut with maestro Daniel Meyer. The performance will also include a rare early season show by the Erie Philharmonic Chorus, according to Executive Director Bobby Pape.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AccuWeather forecasts a winter for Erie beginning Dec 1 with frigid temperatures and heavy lake effect snow that may mimic last winter's record snowfall of 111.1 inches. Weather models predict lake areas will see more precipitation—while other parts may receive less.  The Erie Times-News
  • A report by the Green Building Alliance showed that in 2024 Erie cut its carbon emissions by 37.5% — a drop equal to 6 million car trips around Presque Isle. The report also noted that the Alliance planned to soon measure indoor air quality in buildings and study demolition waste impacts as Erie works toward a 50% reduction by 2030.  YourErie.com

  • Sober Erie is a group for people who do not drink alcohol and meet each month at local bars to enjoy nonalcoholic mocktails. The group began in 2023 and was founded by Joelle Mineo and Katrina Turner—who say it shows young adults are choosing a healthier way to have fun.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie County high school fans can vote for the best student section based on cheers, noise, and support (poll open until Sunday night).
