COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lettie G. Howard crew reminds residents that there is still time to enjoy day sails despite brisk weather — rides will be available this weekend and next. After that, the vessel will shut down until spring — giving those interested a final chance for fall fun on the water.  YourErie.com
  • Erie Habitat for Humanity dedicated two brand new homes last Thursday to the Brown and Copland families after each exceeded the 300-hour volunteer requirement by helping with tasks like foundation laying and mudding. Both families expect their new homes to bring long-term financial benefits (turning monthly mortgage payments into equity) and a lasting legacy.  YourErie.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marc Corbin reopens his family grocery as Albion Marketplace on East State Street in a soft-opening that sold 6,000 donuts in its first week and will add an Asian food section, wine department, and local flowers soon. The store is open from 7 AM to 2 PM+ it will accept EBT and SNAP benefits once the federal shutdown ends.  YourErie.com
  • Scott Enterprises announced it will build an upscale Marriott hotel in Erie that offers lakeside views and modern amenities. The project will cost $32 million with $7.5 million in CRIZ funding and will break ground in early 2026.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Last winter, heavy snowfall on Station Road in Harborcreek broke records in Erie and North East, but current forecasts do not expect such storms. Residents interested in weather and safety can join a free SKYWARN class at Blasco Library on Saturday at 2 p.m. — all ages are welcome.  YourErie.com
  • Representatives from the Australian firm A1 Evolution visited the former Erie Coke property on October 15 to review plans for cleaning up the contaminated site. DEP finished the current phase of investigation and will release a final report in the coming months to help decide the public remediation process with the Erie Port Authority and the Erie County Redevelopment Authority.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie Water Works was awarded $10M to replace nearly 1,000 old galvanized and lead service lines—this project will improve water quality for over 58,000 local customers and will complete the elimination of lead pipes by the end of 2027. The funding includes $9.6M as a grant and $370,000 as a low-interest loan as part of a larger PENNVEST investment across 23 counties.  YourErie.com
  • After being closed for more than a year because of structural issues, the Route 20 bridge in North East is now open. The bridge—located over Twenty Mile Creek between Gulf Road and Gay Road—cost over $9.6 million to redesign and ended the long detour routes.  YourErie.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • District 10 girls volleyball playoffs will start on Oct. 21 as teams across the district compete for four championships—Erie is set to face McDowell in the Class 4A title match on Oct. 23.  The Erie Times-News
  • District 10 announced soccer playoff brackets that will begin on Oct. 18 in four boys’ and four girls’ classes with games at venues including Franklin High School. The brackets include Class 4A championships at HFEC on Oct. 23—where Erie will face McDowell at 6 p.m. in girls’ and 8 p.m. in boys’ contests.  The Erie Times-News
