COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scott Enterprises has launched its Plate It Forward food drive at all its locations to support the Erie City Mission—donors who bring a nonperishable item will be entered to win four Splash Lagoon passes. The drive will run through November 14 to help the mission care for local men, women, and youth in need.  TalkErie.com
  • The Erie City Mission visited nearly 400 homeless encampments in the past year and connected with people in need through three weekly visits. The Hamot Health Foundation will begin construction in January on a project at 21st and Sassafras that will convert a former school into 22 supportive housing apartments—expected to open by next fall.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erie's Catholic School System hosted Grand-Friends Day at St. George Catholic School on Wednesday afternoon, inviting over 600 grandparents and senior friends for class activities, family photo shoots, and more. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT is realigning Bayfront Connect—designed to improve access for pedestrians and vehicles—to make it easier for people to reach Erie’s bayfront attractions.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Health and Pennsylvania Downtown Center announced a $380,000 grant to 11 communities to improve routes for walking and biking—Erie County will receive $50,000 through the WalkWorks program. Over the next year, local planners will work with communities to review current routes, gather public input, and create Active Transportation Plans to boost health and ease travel.  TalkErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The PA Insurance Department confirmed that for 2026, small group health insurance plans will rise by an average of 12.7% while individual plans will increase by 21.5% due to rising medical claims—costs driven by inflation and popular drugs like Ozempic. Insurance expert Greg Deemer advised Erie-area individuals and small businesses to review their options as open enrollment for individual plans starts Nov. 1.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erin Mrenak, director of the Erie County Health Department, demonstrated how to use the 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment so residents can easily understand local health priorities— the tool will help guide future actions by local leaders.  The Erie Times-News

  • Seneca high school football players practiced run blocking footwork in the latest District 10 'In the Trenches' series as head coach Jack Corey showcased techniques he learned from college. The linemen—Austin Jacobs, Braedon Stankiewiz, and Nick Olsen—explained the zone and back shoulder steps used to strengthen their run-heavy offense.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie will host a 14U AA Fall Showcase youth hockey tournament from Friday through Sunday at Flo Fabrizio Ice Arena—featuring AA teams from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan while offering players exposure ahead of the season. The Eerie Power powerlifting competition will be held Saturday at Sinai Sports with doors opening at 8 a.m. and lifting beginning at 9 a.m. for 45 lifters competing across all weight and age classes.  TalkErie.com
  • District 10 football will offer several key matchups on Oct 17 as Mercyhurst Prep looks to clinch first place at Saxon Stadium and Fort LeBoeuf tries for a perfect record at Girard.
