COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Erie Port Authority will host a Future Concepts Open House on Oct. 8 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.—community leaders want input on the future of the nearly 100-acre former Erie Coke site, restored by the Erie County Redevelopment Authority and the Pennsylvania DEP.  YourErie.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union workers at an Erie-area nursing home and seven other facilities voted for a three-day strike from Oct. 14 to 16 to protest Valley West Health's unfair labor practices—about 750 employees across 10 facilities are involved—and workers at two additional sites plan to hold informational pickets on Oct. 16.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie's Pony Express owner David Grab said today that his store could close after the USPS terminated its contract—he is now considering options to keep it open.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wiley Community Charter School purchased the former Mount Calvary Catholic Church and School at 426 Eagle Point Blvd for $595,000 on Sept. 26 after leasing the building for six years—plans call for converting the unused church into a school auditorium for nearly 200 middle school students.  The Erie Times-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today at Waldameer Park, nearly 1,200 pumpkins were carved by 56 local groups in the annual Pumpkin Walk—raising funds for environmental and horticultural education across the county.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Millcreek Township residents will vote on November 4th on a proposed government change—shifting from a three-supervisor setup to a council-manager format with five elected supervisors and a professional manager—to better serve 54,000 residents. The move follows a commission study completed in July that showed the new system meets state law and provides fairer representation.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie is asking residents for feedback on a multiyear plan to improve public parks—an online survey is open until Oct. 31 and takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete. The plan uses over $4 million in ARP funds with help from Design Workshop to upgrade more than 50 parks and playgrounds.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Jordan Road Bridge reopened a little more than two months early and now carries about 850 cars each day near Penn State Behrend campus—crews will complete paving the shoulder, install a high-tension cable barrier, and add new signs while drivers face temporary lane restrictions. The project cost $5,157,026 and was funded with federal money.  YourErie.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Strong Minds, Bright Futures partnership will host a community dialogue on Oct. 7 at the Erie Center for Arts and Technology—650 East Ave.—where families, educators and mental health providers will discuss early intervention strategies to prevent teen suicide. The event will explore integrating mental health services into regular care to better support Erie youth before a crisis occurs.  The Erie Times-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Serafini family cut the ribbon on Friday for Serafini’s Trattoria—a new restaurant on State Street that carries on a legacy dating back to 1938 after their West 12th Street location closed during COVID. The restaurant, replacing Bricks American Steakhouse in the Cashier House building, seats about 60 people and is already booking reservations fast.  YourErie.com

  • McDowell running back Brody Bonsell scored six touchdowns—running for over 300 yards—to lead his team to a 45-27 win over Cathedral Prep at Gus Anderson Field on Oct. 3, marking his school’s sixth victory in seven meetings and a repeat District 10 Region 7 championship.  The Erie Times-News
  • McDowell football players Brody Bonsell, Caleb Smith and Rocco Perseo spoke after their 45-27 win over Cathedral Prep at Gus Anderson Field. They explained how teamwork helped the win and said they plan to play even stronger in coming games.  The Erie Times-News
