COMMUNITY NEWS

  • JET 24's Lou Baxter and Tom Atkins visited the Crawford Care Center in Saegertown on Monday to answer questions about their work in news and weather—both shared stories about starting at the station. Activity Director Pam Schultz said the visit helped residents feel more connected to the community.  YourErie.com
  • A public vigil will be held at Perry Square on Oct 4 to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on Sept 10 at a Utah college campus — former councilman Brian Shank said the event aims to bring unity. Scheduled speakers include County Executive Brenton Davis and several local pastors, and Jake Banta along with The Band 814 will perform — police will be present to ensure safety.  The Erie Times-News
  • Damian Radock, service manager at Bert’s Bikes & Fitness Erie, urged cyclists to wear helmets and reflective gear as daylight fades — he stressed that riders avoid phone distractions and called on motorists to remain alert on the roads.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Dr. Ian Roberts, the former Millcreek Township School District superintendent now leading Des Moines Public Schools—caught by ICE agents last Friday—is held in Woodbury County Jail after officers found $3,000 cash, a hunting knife, and a loaded handgun on him.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Film Erie is a new nonprofit created by merging two local film groups to offer resources for filmmakers and organize events like the revived FILM 10—20 series. The group received grants to support projects and is planning the upcoming Eerie Horror Fest at the Warner Theatre on Oct. 10—11.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie joined a national tradition when the annual Blue Mass was held Monday evening at St. Francis Xavier Church in McKean to honor first responders—Bishop Lawrence Persico led the service, continuing a 91-year tradition that recognized those who protect our community.  YourErie.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania has new hunting rules that let hunters pursue small game like turkeys, rabbits, grouse, pheasants, squirrels, and bobwhite quail. Small game hunters must wear bright orange, and hunting is allowed on Sundays — except for waterfowl — through December 7.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Millcreek Township extended the deadline for the Gateway Project proposals to October 17 — some developers asked for more time to submit complete plans for the site along West 8th near Peninsula Drive. Township official Matthew Waldinger said officials have waited years to see detailed proposals for the prepared site.  YourErie.com
  • Local officials will hold a public input session on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. at the Erie Western Pennsylvania Port Authority offices at 1 Holland St to gather feedback on redevelopment plans for the property that covers nearly 200 acres. Officials said the environmental cleanup is expected to cost up to $70 million and take 10 to 20 years—making it the costliest remediation project in county history.  The Erie Times-News
