COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie's annual fireworks display will take place on July 3 with the show starting at 10 p.m. at Dobbins Landing—announced by Mayor Joe Schember on June 5 and partly funded by a $15,000 grant from the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority—while free parking and shuttle buses will be offered for attendees.  The Erie Times-News

  • Pulakos Chocolates has opened a new store at Colony Plaza in Millcreek Township with a soft opening that began Friday and continues today while regular hours will start Monday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The shop offers its classic candies & new ice cream from Pot of Gold Dairy and features vintage cast iron signs with outdoor seating next door.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bill Welch—vice president of Erie County Memorial Park—spoke at a ceremony honoring the 727 local soldiers who died in WWII, saying that the sacrifice on D-Day must be remembered by today and future generations; Vietnam veteran Mike Rohan also stressed the need to learn about the brave acts of those who fought long before him.  YourErie.com
  • The Carmelite Monastery on East Gore Road will be demolished by the end of summer after it closed in 2020 and the sisters stripped its interior and donated usable items to local religious groups. The property was returned to the Erie Catholic Diocese — which plans to keep it undeveloped for the adjacent priest retirement home — and Father Christopher Singer praised the sisters for their long service.  YourErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sixty seniors from Seneca High School received their diplomas at the auditorium in Greene Township on June 5 as families and staff celebrated the milestone. Graduate Katrina Carver was honored after earning a full scholarship from Edinboro University for the teaching program.  The Erie Times-News
  • Pennsylvania State Police will host Camp Cadet at Allegheny College on Sunday for boys and girls ages 12-15 from Erie, Warren, Crawford, and Venango counties—offering hands-on sessions with special response teams and helicopter search and rescue crews. Family and friends are invited to a graduation ceremony on Friday when camp ends.  YourErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Depot Road in Harborcreek will be closed between the I-90 on+off ramps starting June 9 for about one month while the $13.4 million reconstruction project continues; drivers will face detours with specific lane restrictions and work later this summer will add a turn lane at Clark Elementary School, with all work scheduled to finish by November. This project aims to improve traffic flow in the area without disrupting the overall transit network.  The Erie Times-News
  • Officials began a two-week dredging process today at the East Avenue Boat Launch to improve water flow and safety for boaters—this project will enhance access for recreational use.  YourErie.com
  • Erie's East Avenue Boat Launch is closed today for a two-week dredging project aimed at removing about 1,200 cubic yards of sediment. Contractors (X-L Excavating) use a yellow turbidity curtain as Tony Pianta (Harbor Master at Erie Western PA Port Authority) said the work will allow boaters to resume use by the end of next week.  YourErie.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Recent Realtor.com data shows that Erie County homes sold for a median of $180,000 in March, up 5.9% from February’s $169,900. Single-family home prices increased 9% from $165,200 last month — while condominium and townhome values dropped slightly.  The Erie Times-News
