- ➤ Mercyhurst University will launch a sustainability camp for students in grades 6-8 from June 16-20 that will offer hands-on lessons on environmental practices and low-impact living. - ➤ Twelve Mercyhurst University students had their analysis on Russia's civil aviation industry published in Tearline—a report that used satellite imagery to show changes amid COVID and related sanctions. - ➤ Four Mercyhurst students boarded the historic Schooner Lettie G. Howard on May 15 to begin a two-week maritime history course led by professional crew members and Captain William Sabatini. The course—developed by Mercyhurst History Professor Dr. Ben Scharff in partnership with Flagship Niagara League—will take them from Erie to visit maritime museums and Lake Erie monuments. - ➤ May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the City of Erie Police highlighted its crisis intervention unit, now nearly two years old, which answered 3,468 calls for mental health outreach and welfare checks last year—supporting both community members and officers—and received a $127,000 grant for further assistance. - ➤ The PHC4 published a study on May 15 that tracked asthma hospitalizations among Pennsylvania residents—finding rates were highest for children under 18, female patients, and minority groups, as well as those in urban areas with high poverty.
