Good morning, Erie. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 2nd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Efforts to revitalize an east Erie neighborhood are moving forward as the former Burton School will become a hub offering youth programs, educational activities and a health and wellness center. Gary Horton of the Urban Erie Community Development Corporation said the project includes a security system (with a shotspotter and 8 cameras) and supports 31 families growing food (to boost area investment).  YourErie.com
  • Erie Housing director Matt Bennett has opened Phoenix House at the corner of East 21st and Ash Streets—a 6,000 square foot building once used as a funeral home that now offers 19 beds for low-income residents, veterans, and parolees to rebuild their lives. The residence charges $600 a month and features separate sleeping areas for men and women as applications are now being accepted.  YourErie.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A PA man was charged after a camera was found in the bathroom of a restaurant on Peach St.—officials have not provided further details—and the case is under investigation.  YourErie.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Keliy Anderson-Staley, a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow, selected 67 works from 632 submissions by local artists for the Erie Art Museum's 102nd Spring Show, which will kick off with an April Art After Dark event this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at 20 E. Fifth St.—the exhibition will be open to the public from April 25 to Aug. 8.  The Erie Times-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie City Council will review an ordinance that puts a November ballot question to voters on forming a commission to study a home rule charter—this idea returns to the agenda after it was shot down in January when there wasn’t enough time before the May primaries to select commission members.  YourErie.com
  • Millcreek Township expanded its fire service after 88 years of volunteer coverage by staffing 26 full-time and 14 part-time firefighters on duty 24/7 at West Lake and a temporary Belle Valley location starting April 1. The new system, funded by a FEMA grant, will cut response times from 7 to 10 minutes down to about 4 minutes.  YourErie.com
  • Erie-based U.S. District Judge Susan Paradise Baxter ruled on Monday that Pennsylvania’s mail ballot date law hurts free speech by forcing voters to write a date that sometimes leads to ballots being thrown out — she found no proof the rule benefits any state interest — and a state Supreme Court will soon hear a related appeal.  The Erie Times-News
