COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Harborcreek man Matthew Atchley, who drowned while trying to save his son in May 2024, is being honored today with a posthumous Carnegie Medal for heroism. His family will receive the medal and a monetary award later this year as a tribute to his selfless actions.  The Erie Times-News
  • The Mercy Center for Women has supported women and children for 32 years by offering case management, housing and rebuilding opportunities for survivors of abuse, homelessness and addiction. The center honors its community during Women Making History Month (with 36 residents) with new programs to help families move forward.  The Erie Times-News
  • Retired social worker Patti Eichen has volunteered for over 10 years at the A.N.N.A Shelter (1555 E. 10th St.) in Erie, where she welcomes new volunteers and cares for cats.  The Erie Times-News

  • Erie's Smith's hot dogs advanced to the second round of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry's 'Coolest Thing Made in PA' contest after first-round votes on March 23, and they will face Turner's Iced Tea as second-round voting closed March 25 (third-round voting opens today at 9 a.m.).  The Erie Times-News
  • Splash Lagoon at 8091 Peach St. was nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for best indoor water park today. Voters may cast ballots until April 20 at noon with the winner announced on April 29.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Waldameer's Ravine Flyer II is nominated for USA Today's 10Best Roller Coaster award, and Erie visitors may vote online daily until April 20 at noon to support the local icon. (Results will be announced on April 29.)  The Erie Times-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cruise the Great Lakes officials visited Erie to evaluate if the city can serve as a future port site — they assessed the potential boost to local tourism and jobs. Further studies on the economic impact are planned.  The Erie Times-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Millcreek School Board voted on a change from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield to Meritain Health on March 23, saving the district $1 million in employee health care costs. Two board members and union leader Ryan Bickel opposed the switch, warning it may hurt staff morale while maintaining identical coverage.  The Erie Times-News
  • Mercy Market at Mercyhurst on Brigges Avenue provides food, clothing, and self-care items to students through weekly 15-point allotments and online ordering by appointment. The market, serving 30-50 students monthly, hosts thrift pop-ups to boost campus support & community engagement.  Mercyhurst University

  • Gannon University's men's basketball team celebrated its NCAA Division II quarterfinal win over Michigan Tech as players and fans shared the moment after the game; the team will prepare for upcoming challenges this season.  The Erie Times-News
