COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Historically significant vessels that experienced a fuel leak are in repair after crews removed thousands of gallons from the USS Croaker and USS The Sullivans with no wildlife harmed; officials say the ships might move to Donjon Shipbuilding + Repair in Erie, although final plans are pending.  The Erie Times-News
  • Connie Garrison, a retired Lake City resident, has volunteered for more than 10 years at Erie City Mission at 1017 French St where she helps prepare and serve meals for those in need. She said her work is rewarding and urged others to check online for various volunteer roles.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie Events awarded bids for foundation work and sign removal for its bayfront market place project. The step sets the stage for upcoming construction along the waterfront.  The Erie Times-News

  • Pitts Funeral Home and Cremation Services filed for Chapter 11 reorganization with a judge to decide on a Chapter 7 liquidation. The business operates at 2926 Pine Ave (with an additional office in Aliquippa) and faces property uncertainty.  The Erie Times-News
  • Crews finished demolishing the Burger King at West 26th and Peninsula to clear space for a new Burger King to be built in Millcreek Township (expected this spring).  The Erie Times-News
  • The Burger King at 26th and Peninsula was torn down in Millcreek to clear the space for a new restaurant. The new building will include extra drive-through lanes + green space around its 3,582 sqft structure, with construction set to begin this spring.  The Erie Times-News

  • Job seekers had the chance to connect with local employers at a virtual career fair held on Tuesday, Mar. 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hosted by PA CareerLink® Erie County/Oil Region, the online event enabled participants to share resumes, discuss qualifications, and explore training resources.  TalkErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from East, Strong Vincent and Woodrow Wilson middle schools along with the Eagle’s Nest Program presented their entrepreneurial projects at the Ice House culminating event at Gannon University on Tuesday, Mar. 24.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie residents are invited to vote online on their favorite part of elementary school until noon on March 27. The poll asks if students enjoyed art, science, or recess, and Gov. Shapiro recently urged guidelines to protect recess as a vital learning time.  The Erie Times-News

  • Dr. Ezra Ameis of Paw Priority advises pet owners to manage seasonal allergies in pets by using proper dosages of antihistamines, pet-friendly wipes, soothing shampoos and HEPA air purifiers during spring. Erie pet parents are encouraged to consult their vet before starting any new treatment.  The Erie Times-News
