  • On Feb. 6, Wingstop opened its second Erie-area restaurant in Harborcreek at 4500 Buffalo Road, in a plaza with several local businesses. The restaurant offers a wide range of wing flavors — with hickory barbecue the best-seller — managed by DV and GR Enterprises LLC.  The Erie Times-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • OpenedEyes founder Brandon Wiley explained that Black History Month reinforces community pride by celebrating Erie's diverse heritage (his recent discussion highlighted its role).  The Erie Times-News
  • Multiple organizations in Erie will mark Black History Month with events, including gatherings at Gannon University on Feb. 9 and 12, programs at the Erie VA and Jefferson Educational Society on Feb. 27, and a business awards gala on Feb. 28.  The Erie Times-News
  • WQLN will refresh its radio lineup on March 2 at 91.3 FM — keeping local favorites while adding new programs in response to federal funding cuts — to offer quality content for the community.  TalkErie.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mercyhurst University received $880,000 in federal funding through U.S. Senator David H. McCormick’s spending request to upgrade simulation equipment for its Nursing and Physician Assistant programs at the School of Health Professions (adding high fidelity patient simulators and VR learning tools to boost hands on training).  Mercyhurst University
  • Gannon University received $500,000 to build two biomedical labs on its Erie campus for cancer treatment and workforce training (the funding was secured by Sen. McCormick), with construction expected to finish later this year.  TalkErie.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie Cemetery (175 years old) is under review for historic designation after a Feb. 4 public hearing before City Council; the nonprofit managing the 75-acre site said the change could help secure grants for upkeep if approved at the meeting on Feb. 18.  The Erie Times-News
  • Erie Water Works advised customers on Feb. 6 to insulate pipes, seal drafts, and leave a small stream running to prevent freezing; the agency reported more frozen service lines and increased water main breaks as the cold drove deeper frost. Homeowners were urged to take precautions to avoid costly repairs.  The Erie Times-News

  • Union City standout Brooke VanTassel scored her 1,000th point in a recent game & reached a key milestone in her season.  The Erie Times-News
  • Rob Brzezinski, a Cathedral Prep graduate, was promoted to interim general manager of the Vikings on Jan. 30 after the dismissal of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and is set to lead the team through the NFL draft in Pittsburgh from Apr. 23-25.  The Erie Times-News
  • Forty-six years ago, the Erie Blades hosted the Soviet hockey team (an exhibition that set the stage for the famed Miracle on Ice) at the former Erie County Fieldhouse on Feb. 7, drawing more than 4,200 fans as the Soviets won 9-0.  The Erie Times-News
  • Lake Effect Hockey hosts the 32nd Sarah Backstrom Memorial Tournament in Erie this weekend at local arenas with 30 teams competing; over 90 teams will play Feb. 13 — 16 to support pediatric leukemia research, and EPIC Volleyball holds its tournament Sunday at Fort LeBoeuf High School at 8:30 a.m.  TalkErie.com
  • Former Cathedral Prep kicker Charlie Baumann said NFL field goals are evolving as athletes grow stronger (predicting a 70-yarder may come soon). He kicked a 50-yard field goal at the 1985 Erie Lions Club Save-an-Eye game and made his comments in an Erie Times-News interview yesterday.  The Erie Times-News
